Customer Reviews: This is the toy they should have made 25 years ago . . . September 5, 2008 L. Gonzalez (New York) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This toy has been sold over the years with many variations (different colors, with and without battery powered lights and sounds, TIE Interceptor versions, etc.). And with a very wide price range as well.
One of the nice things about this toy is the size. The sphere (roughly 5 inches in diameter) is large enough to fit a pilot figure. The back of the sphere is inaccurate because it's always had an added-on "wedge" shape to hold the batteries, but it also makes it easier for a child to hold the toy and not drop it. But the worst thing about this model had always been (until now) those dreadful, out-of-scale, small "wings" which made the ship look more like a child's drawing.
Now, after many years, I see that Hasbro finally decided to make the wings the correct size. The wings are what make the TIE ship distinctive, and I believe they would have sold a lot more of them years ago (and not just to kids) had they done this sooner.
These will probably sell well, and they'll probably be available in light gray as well as blue like the earlier issues, but it's too little, too late for me. I'm a stickler for detail and I already scratch-built two sets of extra wings for my son's two older-version Hasbro TIE toys, so that they look more like the ones in the movies, and I'm not about to buy any more just for the new wings. But that's just my choice.
These may be just toys, but kids want them to look "realistic" too!
But for those who haven't bought this before I think that, for a toy, it's a fairly good representation of one of Star Wars' more famous space ships, and I think most kids will like it. It's best new features are that it now comes with a pilot figure, and, as mentioned before, the new, larger wings.
