While R2 responded to simple commands with no problems, we had difficulty getting him to respond reliably to more complex requests. We trust that, like with any voice-operated electronic system, over time it will get easier to produce a wider range of commands that R2 consistently responds to.  great toy but overpriced July 19, 2010

This is a nice item for a collector for me. Price however is on the high side. Android doesn't respond as well as it should. You have to keep on repeating commands. You continually have to reset it when it stops following commands.

The Droid that does nothing. After have three different people trying for two hours we gave up and sent it back.
Once in a while it would respond to a command, just enough to make me think it is another piece of software driven junk.
If it were a mechanical toy it would be pulled from the market but it seems people just accept that it's OK for anything with software to work half-way.
From the reviews it seem some people had good luck with them that's why I bought it. Maybe some work better than others.
On the plus side Amazon was great about the return.

Cool toy. He doesn't follow directions every time but its often enough to be a lot of fun. He works better when the background noise is kept to a minimum (like turning the TV off). The "Dance program", "Remember Darth Vader" and "Play message" responses are especially entertaining to Star Wars fans. Once he has you trained to wait for his responses (positive or negative), he works much better. Battery life seems pretty good. Santa had been watching these for a while and finally jumped on it when it was an Amazon lightning deal before Christmas and it is well worth that price.

My son has asked for this robot for the past two Christmases. I finally broke down and bought it for him because he is getting older and this past year is more than likely the last year he will believe in Santa. I couldn't wait to see the look on his face when he realized that Santa finally had brought him this robot, his "dream" gift! We took him out of the box, read the instructions, and inserted the batteries! We were quickly disappointed as he only does two or 3 of the commands and frequently tells us "no" by moving his head from side to side. This is a great disappointment to my son and to me who spent A LOT of money. I don't know what to do as he has already been opened up and played with or at least attempted to be played with. This was a waste of hard earned money and my son barely plays with him because it is too frustrating!!

I can't remember ever having so much fun with a toy! It's like having another toddler in the house. He'll follow your commands only if you say them correctly in the right order, but his voice recognition is amazing. He will respond to female voices as well as male and this system does not require training, except for the owner. His negative responses sound a little too much like "bastard" for me. Other than that, I enjoy his whistles and tweets immensely. I can't believe his artificial intelligence is at such an enjoyable level for the great price I paid for him. Adding an ability to record half a dozen messages to his repitraTo make him better is to his repertoire.
