I have every Lego Star Wars set made so far by Lego. My son has most of them as well. This is one that I opened and made to play with him. Our favorites by far are all of the Jabba sets, Cloud City, Sandcrawler, Death Star and the Cantina set. This set however is one of our least favorites. It seems as though Lego is now officially going for pure profit and less durability and playability lately.
I am so sick of seeing Lego using cheap stickers for the sets and not printing on the pieces individually. This is a HUGE drawback of the latest sets. Kids can not play with them as little kids are so rough on them that stickers easily come off or get scratched. My son still plays with my old Space legos from the late seventies and early eighties. Those printed pieces are still shiny and bright even though they are heavily used.
The second problem I have with this set and other current sets of the last few years is the lack of true baseplates. I think lego is cutting costs by not including them in sets. This set in particular could have used a printed baseplate with some of Luke's belongings strewn about on the snow as well and maybe signs of a scuffle.
The third problem I have with this set is the design. It is not a well thought out design. Any Star Wars fan or good Lego Designer would not only watch the movie more closely but research other old Toys from Kenner and Hasbro to get set Ideas. Why would you include another badly designed snowspeeder ( with cheap stickers instead of printed parts like the older versions) when you could have had a Tauntaun and a bigger snow cave? Maybe even do what Hasbro did and make a Tauntaun with an opening stomach compartment for Luke to keep warm inside. Or make the cave bigger and have it open and close like the previous Yoda's hut from Lego but bigger?
I noticed when my son was putting it together it was not a very sturdy design. The thing kept breaking apart at certain points. If you push down on the roof too hard it will just collapse. This is due to the use of the one piece tall wall pieces used to make the side walls of the opening. These pieces are always replaced by my son and I when building any Lego set with actual 1X2 and 1x4 pieces built up to make a sturdy wall. C'mon Lego! These are supposed to be Lego sets not Duplo! Why such BIG pieces all the time now!
As a fan of Star Wars and Lego, I have no problem paying $[...] bucks for this set but I feel that Lego is making HUGE mistakes by using stickers, big Duplo-like wall pieces, and not giving us anything new but the minifigures. My son and I are going to have to completely redesign this cave and make it bigger as well as add a Tauntaun to make this set what it should be. I am glad to see Lego giving us the new figures and making an effort to give us new sets but they need to stop being so cheap and start hiring actual Star Wars fans to create the Star Wars designs. I really would like to see Lego improve their product. It would be nice to see them make toys of the caliber that they have been known and loved for for generations.

The Hoth Wampa Cave is a wondeful playset and a great addition to Echo Base (7749), Rebel Trooper Battle Pack (8083) and Snowtrooper Battle Pack (8084). Your kid (7 yrs. on up) will have loads of fun and little trouble building the Wampa Cave with Luke dangling above in the rafters awaiting his fate from the Wampa himself...right after he finishes his turkey leg of course...while Zev swooshes around in his nicely designed Snowspeeder desparately looking for Luke.
PRO's...
- Well designed Snowspeeder. It's quite similar to previous Snowspeeder models but if you've never gotten one it's a must get set. Nice shape and fairly sturdy. Top view looks great (note: I believe the rear gun is different than previous sets).
- Cockpit Opens closes in two parts. Front, longer end opens for pilot, then back section (attached to front canopy) tilts open for rear gunner/navigator.
- Rear toe cable/grappling hook on a wench.
- 2 front cannons and one rear laser/grappling gun.
- Cockpit interior has a sticker panel showing a silohette of an AT-AT.
- Left and right rear wing flaps open to reveal electronic/interior engine details (stickered).
- Wampa Cave is nicely designed with front large cave opening(simply designed) to fit the Wampa itself. Also to the left of the front we have a small, dark gray rock formation (small BURP)
- Interior of cave has stalactites (where you'd attach Luke to, or any unlucky tresspasser).
- Taun Taun skeletal remains.
- A launcher for Luke's lightsaber mimicing his telekinetic force powers from the movie. Neat feature where you put in the lightsaber (blade first) into a technique 2x1 brick and tilt up, then snap down (quickly but not too hard) and it'll shoot out the saber towards Luke up above (make sure saber is put in ALL the way to the hilt and tilt the mechanism up before snapping down to work properly. Also hold the Cave firmly when doing this).
MINI-FIGs...
- The Wampa is the star fig. for this set. Nicely designed all around with movable horns (which look like the Taun Taun tusks), movable arms and nice, sharp graphic detail for the fur. Left hand can hold a mini-fig and right hand can hold the turkey leg and the Skeleton figure. Hoth Luke Skywalker is a new mini-fig. New head and new Hoth torso print (front/back) but goggles and hat are the same as the Rebel Troopers from set 8083. Zev Senesca is the same X-Wing pilot w/helmet from set 8083. The Skeleton is the familiar fantasy era skeleton (happy faced).
CON's...
- Sparse interior cockpit details for Snowspeeder.
- Cockpit canopy can come off from time to time when opening/closing.
- Stickered details. Wish it was printed tiles.
- Wampa Cave details a bit too simple but effective though.
- Wampa figure's legs not poseable. Also wished head would tilt/turn or better his hips.
- Snowspeeder needed to be a bit bigger model. Nicely designed but a bit small.
- Rear gun of Snowspeeder is only a horn piece. Needed a better design.
- Taun Taun should've been added to this set while the Snowspeeder should've been with the Echo Base set.
- No hand held blaster weapons.
Overall a really fun playset. I highly recommend this for your kid even though it's about $5-$10 dollars too much, it has 2 unique figures, a cool lightsaber play function and a nice Snowspeeder along with the Cave make it high on playability.

The build is the same as the last set (Echo Base), sturdy and fun. My 7-year-old put it together pretty easily, with a little help. The cave is OK, but a bit of a pain to snap together with the roof. Luke in snow gear, Zev, a skeleton and the Wampa round out a pretty fun little set.
Hopefully this starts a trend of Lego releasing decent sets in enough numbers that collectors can't gouge families anymore (*cough* CLOUD CITY *cough*).
Boba Fett's Slave 1 is next on the list (A cool new Boba minfig with cape, a new Han in Carbonite and Bossk!).
